GOALS FOR THE POSITION
Orlando Shakes seeks a high energy leader to serve as a critical part of the Senior Leadership team, demonstrating proven prior success and skill which will propel the Theater forward in preparation for significant growth in the areas of Audience Development and Community Engagement. This leader will provide significant contributions to the institutional brand profile and support the desire to greatly expand reach and engagement across Central Florida market segments. Our culture is focused upon preserving our classical origin and contributing to the artform through innovation and the creation of new works.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the development and execution of brand management, communications, and marketing strategies that drive community engagement, build institutional identity, advance visibility, and increase revenue. Working in close partnership with colleagues across the Theater, the Director of Marketing & Communications manages media relations, advertising, promotions, and digital engagement efforts. The successful candidate will be creative, collaborative, data-driven, and forward-thinking. The work of the Director of Marketing and Communications will be guided by the organization’s mission, values, and strategic plan. They will lead and coordinate the theater-wide approach to growing the Theater’s audience and will actively participate in the overall management of the Theater by serving on the senior management team.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Develops and oversees overall brand strategy and management, advertising, promotion, brand reputation, digital marketing including social media, merchandising, public relations, and executive communications via annual marketing plan
- In collaboration with the Executive and Artistic Directors, drives the institution’s aesthetic vision and voice in all content including graphic identity, collateral materials, digital presence, advertising, promotional programs, and signage
- Oversees development and maintenance of graphic and communications standards including tone, personality, voice, and style
- Leads, creates, manages, and implements multi-year marketing and promotions plans, which support Orlando Shakes strategic priorities including identification and leveraging of cross-marketing opportunities with community, state, and regional partners and constituencies
- Directs collection, analysis, and interpretation of market data, determining and evaluating current and future market trends. Supervises market research activities to develop actionable consumer insights
Creates and assesses metrics to gauge and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of marketing and public relations initiatives - In collaboration with department leaders, creates marketing and audience development plans for the Theater and its productions, programs, and events
- Incorporates equity into communications, both reflecting and strengthening Orlando Shakes’ reach to audiences from multiple demographics via market segmentation
- Employs traditional and non-traditional platforms and vehicles to establish an exciting and enduring local, national, and international identity for the Theater as a welcoming, inclusive, and top tier cultural destination
- Manages external and media relations, including press inquiries, increasing public awareness of theTheater and its activities.
- Serves as representative and spokesperson for the institution in the community, the field, and with media, participates in various professional events, manages on-the-ground logistics and provides advance staffing at PR events and executive presentations
- Works collaboratively with the Development Department in the creation and fulfillment of benefits associated with strategic marketing relationships, corporate sponsorships, and foundation grants
- Develops and maintains departmental budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and maximizing impact and return on investment
- Directly manages the Public Relations & Marketing Manager, Graphic & Web Designer, Box Office Manager, and the Audience Development Manager
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing or related field
- A minimum of five (5) or more years combined experience in direct to consumer marketing and communications; public and media relations; and brand and digital strategies.
- Proven success in the management and development of full-time staff including the ability to lead, supervise, motivate, and evaluate staff in a high volume, fast-paced environment
- Proven experience in project management, data management and analysis
- A deep personal commitment to, and understanding of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
- Aptitude in Google applications, CRM and ticketing systems, ideally Spectrix which is the current system used by Orlando Shakes
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- Ten (10) years experience is preferred, as is experience in marketing and communications for visitor/customer focused organizations such as cultural, arts, or tourism
- Previous experience with professional performing arts organization or industry
- Knowledge and understanding of the Orlando nonprofit theater/live entertainment market strongly preferred
PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Proven ability to create and successfully execute a multi-strategy, multi-year marketing and communications plan
- Deep experience in all areas of marketing, including: website tracking and metrics; market segmentation; social media; PR and advertising; videography and photography; email marketing and communications; CRM database; SEO; mobile engagement platforms; E-commerce, including website optimization, content and functionality, and email acquisition strategies
- Skilled at managing within a compact and nimble organization, responsible for both high level strategy and logistical implementation
- Keen analytic and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data analysis versus reporting numbers
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and in close cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders, including Board Members, coworkers, outside entities and individuals
- Agility, demonstrating a comfort level with ambiguity by acting/reacting with flexibility and approaching problems from different perspectives with a solution orientation, including responding quickly to unexpected challenges and shifting priorities
- Professional poise, presentation ability, and public speaking skills
- Superior writing and editing skills, with a strong sense of narrative and story-telling
- A track record of successful collaboration with fundraising professionals
- A high level of professional integrity, accountability, diplomacy, and discretion when handling sensitive issues
WORK SCHEDULE & ENVIRONMENT
The work schedule generally is Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A flexible work schedule or additional work hours may be necessary, to meet the requirements of this position, which encompasses evening hours and weekend work. The responsibilities and required interactions of this position are not conducive to remote work. Orlando Shakes facility is a climate controlled Theater with multiple venues, standard offices, concessions program, gift shop, and other non-public spaces
SALARY RANGE $60,000 - $75,000
Commensurate with experience. Range is competitive as benchmarked by industry through Theatre Communications Group and locally through the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy at Rollins College.

Seasonal, Full Time Properties Assistant - Orlando Shakespeare Theater
Orlando Shakespeare Theater is searching for a seasonal, full time Properties Assistant for our 2025-2026 season (July 14, 2025 through April 26, 2026).
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Properties Supervisor in running the prop shop
- Research, source, build, alter, create, and organize the hand props, furniture, and set dressing for each production
- Collaborate with the Props Supervisor, Directors, Designers, Stage Managers, and other departments to meet artistic and practical needs
- Help ensure the props meet safety and durability requirements for each production
- Help maintain prop storage, inventory, and post-show strike
Requirements include:
- Basic knowledge of carpentry, sewing, crafting, and scenic painting
- Comfortability using hand and power tools, as well as common materials (wood, glue, paint, fabric, etc.)
- Strong attention to detail, problem solving skills, time management, and effective communication skills
- The ability to work on projects both independently, with minimum supervision, and with others
- Comfortability in working in a collaborative, sometimes high-pressure environment, and the ability to adapt to evolving show needs and priorities
- Punctual, reliable, and responsive to communication during work hours
- Candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds, and push/pull up to 100 pounds
- Standing or sitting for extended periods of time may be required
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during tech weeks
- Essential computer skills include MS Office Suite, Photoshop (or similar application), and Google Applications
Preferred skills include:
- Previous experience in theater, film, events, or entertainment
- Metal working, welding, soldering, circuitry, upholstery, and Vectorworks/CAD experience are all a plus
- Knowledge of historical periods, materials, or theatrical styles is a bonus

Compensation
Salary Range: $16.50 - $18.00 per hour — Housing and transportation is not provided. Night and weekend availability is required.
