Sensory Friendly Performances

For information, or if you have questions, need assistance, or an accommodation not mentioned, contact the Box Office at 407-447-1700 ext. 1 or email accessibility@orlandoshakes.org.

Parents of young people with a sensory need can be reluctant to attend live-theater. We invite families and caregivers of a child with a sensory need or other social, cognitive, and physical challenges to attend our Sensory Friendly select performances. We provide support and resources for audience members with a special need at all of our Productions.

  • Orlando Shakes welcomes every child to attend the Children’s Series and recognizes that all children are developing their appropriate theater engagement skills. Some youth may only be able to sit for 10-minutes of the production, while others will sit attentively for the full 55-minute performance. Orlando Shakes remains open and flexible to the length of time each child is able to sit with focus and attention and invites all children to engage within their current level of abilities.
  • Social narratives and other resources will be made available to program participants with follow-up instruction and support provided upon request the week the family attends a Children’s Series Production.

Resources

Potential Triggers: Every person has an emotional and physical response to various stimuli. The theater and performances are filled with stimuli. By reviewing this list of Potential Triggers, you may be able to identify stimuli that have potential to negatively trigger your child.

Social Narrative: Each social narrative will help you prepare your child for attending the theater. A social narrative for each production will also be emailed to each attendee 48 hours before their chosen performance.

Special Visit: A special visit and tour of the theatre may be arranged in the week prior to a performance your child is attending. Your child will get to know their seats, and may see/touch various set and costume pieces, or experience sounds and lights that will be part of the production.

Add-On Workshops

Available before or after your students experience the play, enhance their learning with one of our specially designed workshops. (LENGTH: 45 – 60 minutes, FEE: $500 for 4 classes of 35 students each)

  • Shakes Alive! – Orlando Shakes’ Teaching Artists engage your students in an interactive plot summary of Macbeth and learn to paraphrase Shakespearean text, distinguishing between the denotative and connotative meanings of words.
  • Shakespeare’s Clues – Orlando Shakes’ Teaching Artists introduce your students to Iambic Pentameter and Shakespeare’s use of punctuation and wordplay as directions to the actor.
  • Decoding the Sonnet – Teaching Artists will approach the themes, rhyme scheme and structure in Shakespeare’s sonnets. Students will compose their own personal sonnets by the end of the class.

All Middle and High School Workshops align with Florida Standards in Reading, Speaking and Listening, Theater Arts, and Social Studies.
