A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
K-12 Programs

Click here to download our Theater Arts 10/11 Guide for Educators.

“All the world’s a stage,” William Shakespeare tells us, “And all the men and women merely players.” I invite you and your class to join us on the world of our stage, where we not only rehearse and perform, but research, learn, teach, compare, contrast, analyze, critique, experiment, solve problems and work as a team to expand our horizons.

We’re “Shakin’ It Up” at Orlando Shakes, with new Lesson Plans designed to assist teachers with curriculum needs while sharing what is unique and magical about the Theater Arts. We’ve designed our Curriculum Guides with Sunshine State Standards in mind. You’ll find a first section which will help you prepare your students for the theatrical experience, a second section suggesting what to watch and listen for during the performance, and lastly, discussion questions and lesson plans to use when you are back in your classroom, to help your students connect what they’ve learned to their lives and your diverse and demanding curriculum.

As educators, it is imperative that we continue learning as we teach and teaching as we learn. It is my sincere hope that you will find our Curriculum Guides helpful to you and eye opening for your students. And that you feel free to contact us at Orlando Shakes should you have any questions or suggestions on how we can better serve you. We are always learning from you.

Thank you for the tremendous work you do each and every day in nurturing our audiences of tomorrow.

Curtain Up!

Our most popular and award-winning program!
Grades: 4 - 12
Fee: $125 per class or $500 for four classes
Classes: Up to four classes per day (50 - 60 minutes per class) or three block periods (60 - 90
minutes per class). Limit 30 students per class period.
Shakespeare Alive! is a workshop facilitated by two Orlando Shakespeare Theater Actor/Educators. In the first half, students engage in an interactive plot summary of one of William Shakespeare’s plays. They interpret the dialogue and act using appropriate eye contact, body movements and voice register. In the second half of the class, 4th through 5th grade students engage in “Insult War” and “Flattery Battle” using vocabulary from Shakespeare’s time. 6th through 12th graders paraphrase Shakespearean text distinguishing between the denotative and connotative meanings of words. It is a perfect companion experience to attending a student matinee!
Curriculum Connections: Reading, Language Arts-Communication, Theater Arts

Grades: 4 - 12
Fee: $400 for the first 100 students; $75 for each additional group of 50 students. (FREE with any booking of three or more sessions of Shakespeare Alive!)
Two OST Actor/Educators will present love scenes from Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for multiple classes at a time in your auditorium or performance space. Using classical costumes and relying on Shakespeare’s text, they will demonstrate the power of Shakespeare’s words in performance. After the performance, students will be led in a discussion of the role of theater in the past and present, and analyze the performance they just saw. This program works best when followed by our award winning curriculum, Shakespeare Alive!, during which our Actor/Educators visit individual classes to lead your students in their own discovery of acting Shakespeare.

Grades: K - 2
Fee: $400 for the first 100 students; $75 for each additional group of 50 students
OST Actor/Educators connect with learners at every level through a series of interactive exercises designed to inspire the imagination while developing reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. During this 90-minute session our trained Actor/Educators interpret a classic or new story of your choosing. Students are introduced to the elements of a story, create a story map listing the essential elements and are led through a series of high energy games to help them retell the story in their own words. The lesson culminates in an improvised retelling of the story.

Fee: $1000 for up to 20 students. $50 for each additional student (includes all materials)
Classes: Two professional Actor/Educators visit one classroom for 60 - 90 minutes a day for six days. As the week progresses, students are given a role in the play and through rehearsals are taught to identify, analyze and apply new skills to communicate the playwright’s intent through the physical, emotional and social dimensions of his characters. On the final day, you may invite parents to be dazzled by your students’ very own, unique play!
